Growing Juniper Trees:
Growing junipers is easy as long as you follow a few simple guidelines. Junipers grow best in full sun in any well-drained soil Junipers develop a fibrous root system and typically develop a columnar shape with dense branches. Some juniper species are fast-growing such as the skyrocket juniper which typically grows to about 20 feet tall.
Juniper Trees grow best in hot, dry climates. Once established, Juniper Trees are very tolerant of drought and can go without water for long periods of time. Junipers are able to adapt to a wide range of growing conditions. Juniper Trees can make excellent privacy screens due to their dense foliage, they can also be used as border plantings, foundation plantings, or mixed into borders to add a sense of permanence which is so desperately needed in the winter months.

Other species, such as the Hollywood Juniper, are planted for their unique growth habits. Juniper Trees usually grow at a moderate rate of at least a foot per year. They do not develop a large root ball so they can be tucked into smaller corners of the garden.

Juniper Tree Types:
Blue Point Juniper: The Blue Point Juniper is a densely branched evergreen with a naturally pyramidal growing growth habit. The Blue-green foliage of the Blue Point stays consistent year-round and requires little to no pruning once established. This selection is drought tolerant, deer resistant, adaptable to many soil types, and very easy to grow. Makes an excellent low to mid-height privacy screen.
Eastern Red Cedar: The native Eastern Red Cedar or Juniperus virginiana is a large, dense native evergreen tree that is generally seen throughout the eastern United States. Its foliage is a dark blue to green and turns bronze in the winter.
Eastern Red Cedar has a high salt tolerance and can handle just about any soil type so they are safe to be planted by a road where salt may be used in the winter. They can be used as a native privacy screen and are an essential plant to any Native garden or landscape in the Northeast.

Hollywood Juniper: The rustic, twisted form of Hollywood Juniper makes it an interesting specimen or accent plant. Hollywood Juniper does particularly well in coastal environments because of its high tolerance to salt spray. It is also a good choice for privacy screens and windbreaks.
Moonglow Juniper: Moonglow Juniper is a slow-growing evergreen that maintains a slender form while growing to an average height of 12 to 15 feet tall. Due to its compact branching habit, it tends not to be bothered by heavy snow loads. The tight short branches produce deep blue-green foliage that is deer-resistant, and suitable for locations that may experience drought conditions. Moonglow Juniper is sometimes referred to as the Rocky Mountain Juniper.
Skyrocket Juniper: Skyrocket Juniper is a very hardy, fast-growing upright juniper with a very upright columnar growth habit. It can withstand drought & windy conditions better than most upright junipers. Good choice for privacy borders, windbreaks, as well as accent & group plantings. Retains excellent color through the winter.
