First Editions® Twilight Magic™ Crape Myrtle

If you notice your crape myrtle has little to no flowers, it could be that the tree was pruned too late in the season. This causes the new wood to be mistakenly removed causing the buds for the flowers to never fully develop. What is new wood? New wood means these trees produce their new buds before going into their dormant season. Their buds for the next blooming season are produced right before the cold winter months the plant goes dormant.
Your plant could also have overcrowded branches that are causing it not to bloom. Pruning any dead branches that are inside the tree allows for more sunshine and air to reach the tree. Overall, pruning is a tricky game with these plants, but very necessary. Most importantly, never prune a crape myrtle before it blooms.

If your crape myrtle's leaves are curling it is typically caused by lawn chemicals, particularly phenoxy herbicide. These chemicals are frequently sprayed on lawns to control broadleaf weeds. If over time too many small amounts of this herbicide get on your plant, it could cause your plant's leaves to curl.
This problem could also be caused by an infestation of an insect called aphids. These tiny creatures suck sap from leaves and stems of crape myrtles, causing their leaves to turn yellow and curl. Keep an eye on your plant's foliage for any discoloration and always check for any insect infestations to ensure they are caught early.

Often crape myrtles grow as a multi-stemmed small tree, with foliage only present to the upper half. You must find the right space that is far enough away from your home for your plant to reach its full height and width without obstruction from your house. A good rule of thumb is to plant your crape myrtle a minimum of 8 to 10 feet, preferably further, from a building wall. This will allow your plant the proper room for it to expand to its full size. It will naturally tend to grow away from the wall and towards the light.
